The twelfth flight sponsored by Sullivan-Hartogh-Davis Post 730 in Waterloo lifted off at 7 AM last Tuesday morning. By the time it returned 15 hours later, 88 veterans from eastern Iowa had seen many of the sights of Washington, D.C., with stops at six national treasures: the National World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and the United States Air Force Memorial.

With the vast majority of the veterans aboard the flight having served in Korea, the Korean War Memorial, with its 19 stainless steel statues depicting soldiers making their way through a Korean rice paddy, was a popular stop. Another highlight of the day included the opportunity for the veterans to view a wreath-laying ceremony and the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
