Union 14, Aplington-Parkersburg 12

On July 7, the Union baseball team traveled to Parkersburg to earn a conference sweep by the scores of 14-12 and 5-4. In game one, A-P took an early 2-0 lead when they scored two in the first inning. Union got on the board in the second, when Driscol singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Stech. Union would then tie the game in the fourth when Tecklenburg led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Driscol to put the score at 2-2. A-P answered with three runs in the bottom half to push the score to 5-2 in favor of the home team.

Union scored one in the top of the fifth when junior Austin Kiler singled and scored later on a single by junior Justin Carey. A-P scored one of their own in the bottom half to put the score at 6-4 in favor of the Falcons.

After a pitching change in the sixth for the Knights, A-P put together a big inning and scored six runs on five hits. Freshman Cael Lambe came in relief during the inning and was able to record the final two outs to get Union out of the inning trailing 12-4 heading to the final inning.

Union mounted a huge comeback in the seventh as they drew four walks and collected four hits in the inning on their way to scoring ten runs. The following scored runs in the inning: Carey (2), Holschlag, Tecklenburg (2), Glenn, Driscol, Lambe, Stech, and Kiler. Junior Alex Barz stepped up big during the inning by belting two doubles and drove in four runs.

Driscol shut down the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save and preserve the win for Lambe.

The following had hits for the Knights: Carey (3), Tecklenburg, Barz (2), Driscol (2), Stech, and Kiler (2).

Union 5, Aplington-Parkersburg 4

In game two, Union jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. In the first, Holschlag reached after being hit by a pitch and then scored on a hit and run double by Tecklenburg. Tecklenburg would later score on a RBI single by Driscol. In the second, Dylan Stech lead of with by drawing a base on balls and later scored on a two out double by Carey. In the third, Tecklenburg lead off with a triple and scored on a misplayed ball hit by Driscol. A Cael Lambe double scored Driscol to push the score to 5-0.

A-P scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth off Union starter Ted Tecklenburg to make it a close 5-3 game. A-P scored one more in the sixth to edge even closer 5-4.

A-P mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh as the first two batters reached on walks. Driscol came on to relieve Tecklenburg with runners on first and second and no outs. The next A-P batter reached on an infield bunt single to load the bases. The next batter attempted a squeeze bunt, but the Knights were prepared and executed a pitch out which allowed Barz to tag out the tying run at the plate. The Knights were able to get the final two outs to earn the close 5-4 win.

Tecklenburg earned to win, while Driscol earned his second save of the night.
