Waterloo Columbus 3, Union 1

On July 1, the Union Knights split a doubleheader with the league-leading Waterloo Columbus Sailors, coming back to win the second game, 3-2, after dropping the opener, 3-1.

In game one, Union struck first with a run in the first inning. Derek Holschlag reached on a walk and later scored on a single by Alex Barz. Columbus tied the game with a run of their own in the second inning before adding two more in the fourth to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Union starter, Alex Barz, threw a solid, complete game, giving up no earned runs, striking out three and walking four.

Holschlag, Barz, and Cael Lambe collected hits for the Knights.

Union 3, Waterloo Columbus 2

In game two, Columbus scored two runs in the first inning off Union starter, Ted Tecklenburg. That would prove to be all the runs the visiting team would get, as Tecklenburg shut out the Sailors over the remaining six innings.

Similar to game one, Union’s first run would come on a base on balls to Holschlag, followed by a run-scoring Alex Barz single. Union took the lead in the fifth when Holschlag and Tecklenburg scored runs.

Union is now 9-7 in the league and 9-15 overall.
