The Union girls basketball team used the hot outside shooting of Courtney Powell to race out to a big early lead, then never looked back on their way to a 54-28 win over Aplington-Parkersburg in regional quarterfinal play.
The Falcons were able to contain Union’s inside game, as the Knights found post play down low congested with A-P defenders. The Falcons, however, could not contend with Union’s outside shooters, as the Knights buried seven three-pointers, five by Powell, who led all players with 22 points.
On the defensive end of the floor, Union held the Falcons to 43% shooting and just 12 field goals for the game. The Knights, who led 32-19 at the half, outscored A-P 22-9 in the second half.
With the win, the 14th ranked Knights earned a showdown with #8 Hampton-Dumont. Results of the game on Feb. 18 were not available at press time.
