The Union Knights High School softball team is eager to begin its 2015 season. Head coach Sherry Parker, will enter her 2nd season for the Union Knights. Whitney Albertsen will be her assistant. The Knights will play junior varsity/varsity games in the North Iowa Cedar League East Conference with 8 teams this year: Waterloo Columbus, Denver, Aplington-Parkersburg, Jesup, Hudson, Wapsie Valley, Sumner-Fredericksburg, and Union. The Knights will play over 30 varsity games this summer, which include 14 conferences games, four tournaments: North Fayette Valley, BCLUW, Marion, and Independence, and other non conference games including Dike-New Hartford, Vinton-Shellsburg, and Clarksville.
The Knights finished in the top half of the conference last year with a 10-11 record and a 3rd place finish. They look to improve on their overall record of 12-16 last year, which included playing a tough non-conference schedule which featured many rated and state qualifying teams. The Knights were a fairly young team last year starting 1 eighth grader, 4 sophomores, 1 junior, and 3 seniors.
The Knights return 6 starters and 7 letter winners: Kaylee Sherwood, Peyton Parker, Kaitlin Holschlag, Maggie Driscol, Cierra Nolan, Hailee Brown, and Haylee Keune. Union will also have sophomore transfers Jordyn and Justine Nagle in their lineup, who were varsity starters the last two years at Dunkerton. The Knights return 2 NICL East all-conference players this year: Peyton Parker – 2nd Team Pitcher and Maggie Driscol 2nd Team Outfielder. Other new comers looking to help out the Knights are: Tia Renaud (12th), Hailee Acuff (12th), Ashley Carey (10th), Madison Tompkins (9th), Emma Peters (9th), Audrey Powers (9th), Anna Smith (8th), Emily Miehe (8th), Kayla Robb (8th), and Cylie McNeal (8th). Coach Parker, who is excited to start the season states, “The strengths of this team are the experience we have coming back defensively and offensively, their enthusiasm, and team unity.”
The Knights open their season on the road with a jv/varsity game at Wapsie Valley on May 26 starting at 4 PM. The home opener is against Jesup with a jv/varsity contest May 28 at 6 PM.
