Editor’s Note: As the Thanksgiving holiday draws near, The Progress Review shares culinary tips on preparing the big meal of the day, courtesy of first grade students at La Porte City Elementary School. This week, we feature the students in Mrs. Jesse’s and Mrs. Wandschneider’s classes, followed next week by the students in Mrs. Petersen’s class.

Mrs. Jesse’s Class

We will have chicken, cake, and juice.  Put the chicken in the oven for five minutes at a hot temperature.  Eat it.  For the chocolate cake, make it in the oven.  Cook it for ten minutes.  Mom, Dad, my sister, my three brothers, my aunt, and my uncle will all be there.  by Josie Bergmeier

We will have turkey, corn on the cob, muffins, cake, and pop or milk.  Hunt for the turkey, then you take off the feathers and cook it in the oven for 15 seconds at a hot temperature.  Eat it.  Buy the corn or someone will bring it. Put the sticks in it, then you eat it.  First, buy some cupcake mix, then put them in the filling things and put more blueberries in. Cook the muffins for five minutes at a warm temperature. You need to have a lot of chocolate cake batter and mix it. Then cook it for ten seconds. Cool it. Then, put the white frosting on.  Put the candles on.  Grandma Patty, Grandpa, me, my mom, and Dad will be there.  by Trevor Clark

We will have turkey, cheese, and milk.  Put the turkey in hot water.  Let it dry, then we eat it. White and yellow cubed cheese tastes good. Grandma, my cousin, my uncles, my JoJo, my mom, and I will be there.  by Dayshon Denton

We will have fried turkey, pumpkin pie, and water or Kool-Aid.  Put it in a big pot for two hours. I will do puzzles with my two sisters while I am waiting. We mash up some pumpkins, then we put it in the oven for an hour at 100. We have some Kool-Aid and we put it water.  Put it in the fridge to get nice and cold. Aunt Mary, Bill, Billy, and my cousins will be there.  by Ruby Parson

We will have vegetables, chicken, and fruit punch.  Get out the Ranch to go with the carrots and broccoli.  Put the chicken in the oven for 6 minutes at 100.  Evan, Eric, Andrew, Brody, Alex, and other Alex will all be there.  by Kayden Pennell

We will have mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, turkey, Snickers salad, and chocolate pie.  Mash up potatoes with a hammer. You buy the gravy and put it on the corn and mashed potatoes. For the corn, cut the corn off the cob.  Put it in a big bowl. My grandpa hunts turkeys.  He cuts it open to find the bullet. Take out the guts and heart. Cook the turkey on the stove for 17 minutes. Put the turkey and all the food into a bunch of bins. Chocolate pie is for dessert.  My dad helps me with my food if it is hot. My mom, dad, my cousin, my cousin’s mom, grandma, and grandpa will be there.  by Tony Harrenstein

We will have turkey, vegetables, ice cream, and milk.  Hunt the turkey.   Put it in a bucket and cook it outside in the garage for five hours at 600. We will have ham, French fries, Sprite, and apple pie.  Put the ham in the oven for 20 minutes at a hot temperature.  Eat it. Put the French fries in the oven for 5 minutes at a hot temperature. We will have macaroni and cheese, turkey, potato soup, and juice. Put macaroni noodles, milk, and cheese in and stir it and let it go for a little bit. For the turkey, put it in the oven for two hours at forty degrees. Set it on the table to let it cool off for a little while. Slice it into little strips, then put some ketchup on it and eat it. Put some spices and some water in a pan where you make pancakes. Put vegetables in, then you just push the spoon back and forth for about three minutes. Put one more piece of spice in and the food is done. Get a juice bottle out and then you put some juice mix in, then you stir it  My mom, dad, big sisters, grandma, grandpa, and Uncle David will be there. by Joseph Corpman

We will have turkey, mashed potatoes, cherry pie, strawberry pie, and pop.  Put the turkey in the oven for 3 hours at 300⁰. Eat it. Peel the potatoes, put them in a pot, then we mash them. We have to make the dough with sugar, flour, and water. Put the strawberries and cherries in the pie. Cook the pies for 2 minutes at 200⁰.  My grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, mom, and dad will be there.  by Eric Neipert

We will have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, banana cream pie, and milk.  Put the turkey in the oven for 30 minutes at 700. Put it on a big plate. Put the stuffing in a bowl.  Get potatoes at the store, then put them on the plate with the turkey. Get bananas and some cream and put them in the oven for 20 minutes at 200. Put it on a plate.  Mom, Dad, my sister and I will be there.  by Kalen Nosko

We will have turkey, pumpkin pie, fruit, pop for the grown- ups and juice. I will go to the store for some of the food.  I will make the turkey. I will have my grandma, my nana, my grandpa, my mom and dad, my uncle, Rachel, Drew and my great grandma.  by Amber  Stroh

We will have potatoes, ham, cookies, and water. My grandpa and grandma grow the potatoes and then we go there and I dig them. Then we take them home and we cut them up. CJ and I mash them up. We put them in two or three bowls because we have a lot of people.  Put the ham in the oven to cook it for 20 or 30 minutes at 300⁰. We taste it to make sure it is good. If it is not good, then we put it back in the oven. Mom makes dough with flour and eggs and then we make shape cookies with cookie cutters.  We put them in the oven at 300⁰ for 40 minutes.  My cousins, grandmas, grandpas, and some of my aunts and uncles will be there.  by Kate Craft

We will have turkey, roasted beans, meat, and pop.  Buy the turkey from the store and put it in the oven for 2 minutes at 100⁰.  Eat it. Buy the beans from the store and put them in the oven for 6 minutes at 10⁰. Serve the usual kind of lunchmeat. My family and maybe one or two friends will be there.  by Harrison Bistline

We will have chicken nuggets, fries, chocolate milk, and brownies. Cook the chicken nuggets in the oven for 10 minutes at 3⁰.  Put the fries in the fryer for 10 minutes. Put frosting on the brownies and put them in the oven for 11 minutes at 6⁰. My grandma, grandpa, my cousin, mom, and dad will be there.  by Jon Borton

We will have chicken, steak, turkey, carrots, and Kool-Aid.  Put the chicken in the oven for 3 minutes at 14⁰.  Take it out of the oven, put it on a plate, and eat it.  Put the steak in the oven for 14 minutes at 15⁰.  Take it out and eat it. Put the turkey in the oven for 3 minutes at 13⁰. That is what my grandma does. Pull the carrots out of the fridge and eat them. I make the Kool-Aid by getting the mix out of my pantry, put it in a glass of hot water, then let it sit for a while, then I stir. My dad, grandma, mom, and brother will be there.  by Alex Bunston

We will have chicken, turkey, ham, apples, and turkey juice to drink. Put the chicken, turkey, and ham in a pan inside the oven for half an hour and one minute at 4-60. Eat it.  Squeeze the apples and we put green or red ones in the glass and it makes apple juice. Get the juice from the turkey, put it in a glass, put a mix in there and it makes turkey pop.  My mom and dad will be there.  by Evan Hanus

We will have turkey, watermelon, sandwiches, and milk.  Put the turkey in the oven for one minute and fifty-nine seconds at a hot temperature. Take it out of the oven, put it on a tray, cut it, and eat it. Get 5 hand-fulls of watermelon and I just eat it. Put the sandwiches in the oven or microwave on HOT for the same minutes as the turkey.  Cheryl, Jeff, my mom, my dad, my sister, my uncle or aunt might be there.  by Jace Hedeman

We will have mashed potatoes, turkey, gravy, and punch. There are potatoes that are circles and you cook them on the stove for eight minutes. Then you smash them. Cook the turkey in the oven for nine minutes at 100. Eat it. Get the gravy at the store. It is in a can. Put it in a pan and put it on the mashed potatoes. I think I am going to my great-grandma and grandpa’s house. My brother, sisters, and cousins will be there.  by Cameron Hickok

We will have turkey, mashed potatoes, cookies, and pop.  Cook the turkey in a pot with a lid that you plug in for 30 minutes at a warm temperature. Cut it. Slice the peels on the potatoes, then you put in a pot, then cook them for 20 minutes. Put gravy on them. For the cookies, use dough to make the cookies. Cook them for ten minutes. After that, put frosting and sprinkles on them. My mom, me, Cameron, Jasmine, Jamie, and Cody will all be there.  by Matthew Hickok

We will have turkey, peas (even though I don’t like peas!), jelly and marshmallows, ice cream, lemonade, and apple cider. Put the turkey in the oven for 35 minutes at 50. Cut it open. Wash the peas, boil them in a boiling pan in the oven for 15 minutes at 00. Grandma puts a little jelly in the pan, then she puts it in the freezer to freeze it. She puts holes in the jelly and puts the marshmallows in. Get the ice cream (any kind) from the store and we put it in our freezer.   For the apple cider, put apple juice in a teapot, put it on the stove until it gets hot. Then, drink it.  My grandma, Gabriel and Zander, Arianna, my grandpa, my mom, dad and brother, and I will be there.  by Dominic  Huisman

We will have turkey, ice cream, peas, root beer, and Kool-Aid.  Put the turkey in the oven for eighteen minutes at ten degrees. Eat it. I am going to have vanilla ice cream. I will keep it in the freezer until they come. Put the peas in the microwave for six minutes. Eat them. Put some water in glasses and stir it. That is how you make Kool-Aid. Eat it.  We get to eat vanilla ice cream after supper. I like it plain.  My sister and I will have Goldfish, not the ones that you cook in the oven, but the ones with cheese. My grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, aunt Jenny, aunt Amber, aunt Heather, and my great-grandma will all be there.  by Jayden Rose

We will roast the turkey in the oven for six minutes at a hot temperature. On the stove we will cook pumpkin pie. We will have turkey, hamburgers, pumpkin pie, and juice.  Grill the turkey for four minutes, then chop it up. Put the hamburgers on the grill for two minutes. Put cheese and ketchup on them.
