As the Union High School Boys Tennis Team prepares for the 2018 season, practice time, like a warm sunny day, has been hard to find. The team has 12 players out this year, who hope to see action on April 12 in a meet that was pushed back one week due to snow showers.

The Knights should be solid at the number one and two positions, but there is a major drop off in experience after that.

Number 1: Rhett Peters, sophomore letter winner, was Union’s #1 player with a 13-3 record at that position last year and defeated a couple of state qualifiers along the way.

Number 2: Hunter Fleshner, a senior, played #2 last year with an 8-8 record. He will team up with Rhett Peters for doubles.

Number 3: Levi Gray, a junior who saw some varsity action last year, but has missed most of our practices this year due to illnesses.

Number 4: Sam Ollendieck, a junior, is our comic relief guy. He played in the #5 slot last year.

Number 5: Freshman Tyson Fleshner. This newbie has been around big brother and knows the game. He just needs match experience. I think he has a huge up-side, once he plays regularly.

Number 6: Senior Mason Thomsen, who filled this slot last year, or junior Ben Rempe, who played some varsity two years ago but wasn’t out for tennis last year, will compete for this spot on the team.

The Knights have a very tough schedule in 2018, with Aplington-Parkersburg, Waterloo Columbus and Marion (twice), looming as some of the toughest teams Union will face. I would love to come out of it with a .500 record and have much hope for advancing a couple of players past districts.
