Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story is based on the “coat of many colours” of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. It’s family-friendly story. Familiar themes and catchy music have resulted in numerous stagings. According to the Really Useful Group, owner of the copyright, more than 20,000 schools and amateur theatre groups had staged productions by the year 2008.
The musical was mounted on Broadway in 1982. Several major revivals, national tours, and a 1999 direct-to-video film starring Donny Osmond followed.
There are so many genres of music in this show it is hard to keep up. During the show, you’ll hear Country, Calypso, French ballad, even Elvis. “Close Every Door” and “Any Dream Will Do” are two of the most recognized songs in this production, the first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly.
