On November 5, voters in Black Hawk County will be asked to extend the 1% local option sales tax in each of their communities. The measure, approved by La Porte City voters in 2011, is set to expire, county-wide, in 2015.

On Election Day, each community in the county can independently accept or reject the continued collection of the tax for another ten years through the year 2025. Only the cities who approve the measure will receive their portion of the revenue it generates. In La Porte City, the money generated by this tax is reserved solely for property tax relief, as stated on the ballot.

Currently, the revenue from the local sales option tax La Porte City is estimated to receive for Fiscal Year 2014 is $295,000, which comprises 19.4% of city’s estimated general fund revenues.
