Six Union Knights earned All-Conference honors for their play during the 2012-13 baseball season. Sophomores Alex Barz and Brady Driscol earned First Team All-Conference honors while Justin Carey, Nic Peters, and Ted Tecklenburg earned Second Team recognition and Will Crees rounded things out as a Honorable Mention pick.
Barz earned his First Team All-Conference honor as a catcher with some hot hitting mid-way through the season which lead to an outstanding .512 conference batting average. Barz collected 21 hits in 41 at bats with five doubles and a team high 19 runs batted in. His on base percentage also lead the team at .565. Although Barz was selected as a catcher, he also earned a 2-0 record on the mound with a 1.62 earned run average in 13 innings of work. Barz walked 5 and struck out 12 during conference play. One win was a one-hit shutout over conference winners Aplington-Parkersburg.
Driscol earned First Team honors as a pitcher after being selected as a Second Team pitcher last year. Driscol lead the league in innings pitched at 36 while earning a 3-2 record with a 1.94 earned run average. He walked five and struck out 24 in conference play. Driscol joined Barz in throwing a conference shutout over Jesup. When he wasn’t pitching, Driscol played shortstop with a .381 batting average.
Fellow sophomore Justin Carey was selected to the Second Team as an outfielder. Carey hit .308 in conference play collecting 12 hits in 39 at bats. His 17 runs scored in conference play from his lead off position lead the team and his .481 on base percentage ranked him high as well.
Senior Nic Peters earned Second Team All-Conference honors as a pitcher. Peters was 2-3 in 33 2/3 innings pitched with a 3.95 earned run average. He walked six batters while striking out 22. When Peters wasn’t pitching he played third base and the outfield for the Knights.
Junior Ted Tecklenburg earned Second Team All-Conference honors at second base. Tecklenburg hit .310 in conference play collecting 13 hits in 42 at bats. His 14 runs scored ranked second on the team and his 8 runs batted in ranked third. Tecklenburg played a solid second base and shortstop making the routine plays as well as covering a lot of ground on fly balls.
Senior Will Crees earned Honorable Mention honors after having a great start to the season and then it coming to a sudden halt after breaking his wrist and giving his career an abrupt end. Crees was able to play about half the season before injury and collected a .478 batting average in 23 plate appearances. Crees batted clean up and played centerfield for the Knights.
Union finished in a tie for second place in the NICL East with a 7-5 record.
