Union Opens Up 2012-2013 Campaign with a Win
The Union Baseball Team opened the season with a come from behind win over Montezuma at home on May 20. Junior Bo Bader started on the mound for the Knights, holding the Braves runless over the first three innings. Union sophomore Justin Carey got things started in the first inning by reaching on an error, advancing on a hit by Ted Tecklenburg, and later scoring on an error. Brady Driscol’s hit drove in Tecklenburg for a quick 2-0 start.
Montezuma got things going in the top fourth scoring seven runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead. Union responded with four runs by Austin Kiler, Carey, Driscol, and Bader, aided by Alex Barz’s clearing the bases with a two out double to the gap.
Montezuma tied the game in the fifth and held Union scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. After Carey was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored the winning run on a squeeze play with Driscol. Relief pitchers Tecklenburg and Barz held Montezuma scoreless to perserve the win and earned Barz his first varsity win.
In game two, Union was leading 3-0 after three and a half innings when the game was called due to lightning.
