Union 3, Aplington-Parkersburg 2

Aplington Parkersburg wasn’t able to come back from the big hole it dug itself into against the Knights, and Aplington Parkersburg lost 3-2 to Union after falling behind by three runs in the third inning on Senior Night, July 6 in La Porte City.

Aplington Parkersburg scored on a walk by Andy Smith in the fifth inning and a single by Corbin Brungard in the seventh inning. Unfortunately, Aplington Parkersburg wasn’t able to take the lead back.

Alex Barz got the win for the Knights. He allowed one run over four innings. Alex Barz struck out two, walked six and gave up two hits.  Derek Holschlag threw the final three innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.  He also earned a safe.   

Nick Waller couldn’t get it done on the rubber for Aplington Parkersburg, taking a loss. He lasted just three innings, walked three, struck out none, and allowed three runs.

The game’s last lead went to the Knights thanks to a first inning rally that saw two runs cross the plate on a groundout by Cael Lambe and an RBI single by Austin Kiler.

Union 9, Aplington-Parkersburg 0

Brady Driscol carried the Knights to a 9-0 victory over Aplington Parkersburg in Game 2 with a strong game at the plate and on the hill.

Union was led by a flawless day at the dish by Driscol, who went 3-3 against Aplington Parkersburg’s pitching. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the third and fifth innings.

The Knights’ Driscol kept Aplington Parkersburg off the scoreboard for all seven innings he was on the bump. He pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out one and walked none.  The shutout is the third of the year by Discol.

Union beat Aplington Parkersburg thanks to 10 hits, including four extra base hits. Knights scored four runs in the sixth.  The Knights scored in the sixth on an RBI single by Justin Carey, a two-run double by Alex Barz, and an RBI single by Cael Lambe.

Carter Cuvelier was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings, walked two and struck out one.

The lead stayed with Knights after the first, when it scored two runs on an RBI double by Driscol.

Driscol collected three hits on the night followed by two hits a piece by Carey and Barz while Holschlag, Lambeth, and Alpers each had one hit a piece.  Barz lead the team with four RBIs.

Union is currently in second place in the NICL with a 14-6 record.  Overall they hold a 10-10 record.
