Vinton-Shellsburg 8, Union 3

Wes Edwards got the win for Vinton on July 8 in the first game a varsity double header played in Vinton. He allowed three runs over seven innings. Edwards struck out none, walked two and gave up nine hits.

Vinton’s Nathan StruveAaron Henderson and Tyler Rippel combined for six hits and four RBIs.

Cael Lambe took the loss for the Knights. He allowed eight runs in six innings, walked two and struck out one.

The bottom of the first saw Vinton take an early lead, 1-0.

The game was never in doubt after the second, as Vinton scored two runs on two sacrifice flys.

Vinton tacked on another three runs in the fourth. A single by Struve ignited the offense,, plating Austin Bohnsack. That was followed up by Henderson’s single, scoring Struve.

A one-run sixth inning helped bring the Knights within five. A sacrifice fly byAustin Kiler fueled the Knights’ comeback.

One run in the top of the seventh helped the Knights close its deficit to 8-3. An RBI single by Justin Carey gave Union life, but a groundouts ended the game.

Vinton-Shellsburg 7, Union 6

The Knights lost the ballgame after losing the lead in the seventh inning Wednesday, as Vinton grabbed a 7-6 victory in seven innings.

Alex Barz put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for Knights. He doubled in the first and fifth innings.

Scottie Wirth got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He pitched two-thirds shutout innings. Wirth struck out none, walked one and gave up no hits.

Derek Holschlag was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs in six innings, walked three and struck out five.

The Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Holschlag got things going for Union  with a single. A single by Justin Carey then moved Holschlag from first to second. The Knights pushed more runs across when Carey scored on an RBI double by Alex Barz.

It didn’t take long for Vinton to answer as it scored four runs of its own in the first. Vinton scored on an error, a sacrifice fly by Aaron Henderson, an RBI triple by Wirth, and a fielder’s choice.

Vinton went up for good in the seventh, scoring one run on two singles.

Union is 17-12 overall and 14-6 in the NICL.
