A 7th and 8th grade Union Middle School team competed in the final round of the Battle of the Books (BOB) competition at Simpson College on March 31. This team placed 10th in a field that began with 86 original teams.
BOB is a reading competition designed to encourage middle school students to read. Teams of five or six students read novels from a pre-selected list of 30 books. Books include the genres of fiction, realistic fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, classics, biography/memoirs, poetry, and a play. Students on the BOB teams have each read five or more books since September.
In February and March, the 86 teams from central Iowa “battled” by identifying authors’ names and answering fact-based questions about the books. The top 15 teams were invited to Simpson for the final contest.
Two teams of 6th grade students competed in the first two rounds of the BOB testing conducted at Union Middle School. The first team was comprised of Dallas Blackburn, Tyson Fleshner, Ellie Behrens, Sarah Roberts, Emma Deaton, and Sophie Winkelpleck. Also competing was a team whose members included Jordan Haas, Marcus Albertsen, Sterling Mullen, Grace Johnson, Sarah Roberts, Belle Weber, and Kylea Neuendorf.
Battle of the Books team members are students in the Union Middle School talented and gifted program administered by Mrs. Vada Elliott.
