A team of five 4-H members from Benton County won the mixed-age division of the Iowa 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl on April 13 at Iowa State University in Ames. The event was sponsored and organized by the ISU Department of Animal Science.
The team of Lydia Albertsen, Gabe Hanson, William Kroneman, Steiger Manson and Josh Wiley completed six matches without a loss to win the mixed-age division of the event. They were tested on their knowledge of beef, swine, sheep and goats, covering topics that included health, nutrition, reproduction, industry facts and current events.
A second team comprised of Breck Coffland, Olivia Hanson, Jillian Hanson, Hannah Siek and Samantha Zahradnik also competed in the mixed-age division. Collectively, the teams represented four Benton County 4-H clubs and four area school districts. They were coached by Maureen Hanson, Bonnie Kroneman, Robin Manson and Stacy Siek.
Iowa 4-H is made up of more than 23,000 young people grades 4-12 who are able to pursue their own interests, from photography to robotics, clothing design to veterinary science, or any subject that inspires them to learn and do.
