Union opened their 2016-2017 season with a wild 58-50 overtime win over the previously unbeaten Jesup J-Hawks in La Porte City on December 6. Struggling to put points on the scoreboard in the first half, the Union offense caught fire in the fourth, finally tying the game at 43 with just 25.2 seconds to play. Overtime saw the Knights match their 15 point production of the fourth quarter in just four minutes of play, mostly due to made free throws. Jesup pulled to withing two, 52-50 with 44.1 seconds to play before John Boisen was fouled and converted both free throws twice down th stretch to seal the Knight victory.
Boisen led Union scoring with 20, with Cael Lambe adding 18 and Daycen Douglass 15.
