The Bruce Boosters 4-H Club enjoyed an exciting year at the 2013 Benton County Fair, at which 25 club members participated.

Five members exhibited projects in home economics and science and engineering that advanced to the Iowa State Fair.  They included Mitchell Hanson, Food and Nutrition; Jenna Lane, Home Improvement; Kristen Lowe, Sewing; Nicole Lowe, Welding and Home Improvement; and Nick McQuilkin, Woodworking. Nicole Lowe also will participate in State Fair 4-H fashion events with an entry in the “$15 Challenge.”

Mathew Rippel earned “Outstanding Junior” honors for his entry in Food and Nutrition. An additional 15 entries from the Bruce Boosters received “Award of Excellence” recognition for projects that were considered for the State Fair.  Among those exhibitors were Hannah Gates (3), Mitchell Hanson, Natalie Hanson, Wesley Hanson, Bobbie Hilmer, Jacob Lowe, Kristen Lowe, Nicole Lowe (5), Payton Sash, and Clayton Sparks.

Bruce Boosters members enjoyed success in the livestock shows as well, including:

  • Mitchell Hanson showed the supreme junior champion dairy animal and champion Brown Swiss animal in the dairy show; and the reserve champion market heifer in the beef show.
  • Wesley Hanson showed the champion dairy steer in the dairy show.
  • Sammi Krug showed the reserve champion Shorthorn heifer in the beef show.
  • Jacob Lowe showed the reserve champion pen of three laying hens in the poultry show.
  • Ryan Miller won the #3 and #5 top Rate of Gain in the beef show.
  • Payton Sash showed the reserve champion breeding doe in the meat goat show.
  • Olivia, Payton and Rylee Sash earned top meat goat herdsmanship honors.
  • Kristen Lowe also was named 2013 Benton County Fair Princess.
