The Bruce Boosters 4-H Club capped off their 4-H year with another fun and exciting week at the 2014 Benton County Fair in Vinton. Twenty-two members of the club proudly exhibited their projects.
Highlights of the week included eight Bruce Boosters exhibits advancing to the Iowa State Fair. They included Mitchell Hanson, Home Improvement; Wesley Hanson, Food and Nutrition and Home Improvement; Jenna Lane, Home Improvement; Jacob Lowe, Mechanics; Kristen Lowe, Photography; and Nicole Lowe, Fashion and Welding. Wesley Hanson and Jacob Lowe also advanced to the Iowa State Fair with a working exhibit.
“Awards of Excellence” for projects considered for the State Fair were presented to Mitchell Hanson, Bobbie Hilmer, Jacob Lowe (2), Kristen Lowe, Nicole Lowe, Nick McQuilkin, Payton Sash (2), and Clayton Sparks. Rebekah Leipold and Nicole Lowe also received Awards of Excellence in fashion modeling events.
Gabe Hanson earned “Outstanding Junior” honors in Food and Nutrition and Home Improvement.
The Bruce Boosters also were well-represented in the livestock events at the fair. Outstanding livestock results included:
Wesley Hanson showed the champion dairy steer.
Sammi Krug showed the champion heavyweight commercial breeding beef heifer.
Eric Miller had the reserve champion rate-of-gain steer.
Ryan Miller had the third-place rate-of-gain steer.
Johnathan McQuilkin had the fourth-place rate-of-gain steer.
Olivia and Rylee Sash earned top honors in meat goat herdsmanship.
Other Bruce Boosters exhibiting at the fair included Katie Hilmer, Georgia Owens, Madison Rippel and Mathew Rippel.
