Union High School’s production of Catch Me If You Can will be one of 30 musical productions featured at the Third Annual Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase. This celebration of musical talent, which recognizes and features entertainment from high schools throughout the state of Iowa, will take place on the Des Moines Civic Center stage on Monday, June 1.
Throughout the school year, performing arts professionals and educators serve as adjudicators who review musical productions presented by participating high schools, offering constructive feedback about the performances. Based on the adjudicators’ feedback, students and productions are honored at the Awards Showcase in the following categories: Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Performance in a Lead or Supporting Role, Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Technical Achievement. In addition to the presentation of awards, more than 400 students will perform excerpts from their schools’ musical productions and collaborative inter-school medleys.
The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase is an event that continues to grow. Last year, 17 high schools participated, nearly double the nine schools that took part in the inaugural Showcase in 2013. This year, all high schools within 125 miles of Des Moines Performing Arts were invited to participate.
The Awards Showcase will also feature the presentation of the Triple Threat Award to one young man and young woman. The two Iowa recipients will join students from across the country in New York City in June for a week of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals from Broadway professionals.
