UHS_FB_CPU090514_104With the move to District 6 in Class 2A, the Union Knights have a long list of new opponents to challenge. On Friday night, Union welcomed one of the few familiar foes remaining on their schedule, Center Point-Urbana (CP-U). And for the second time in three years, the Stormin’ Pointers left La Porte City with a victory in their pockets, as their power running game proved too much for the Union defense to handle.
The first quarter was not kind to the home team, who received the opening kickoff and proceeded to go backward. The combination of negative plays on offense and untimely penalties left the Knights searching for ways to sustain any kind of positive yardage. The Knights only first down in the quarter came as a result of a Stormin’ Pointers penalty.
The Union defense was able to keep Center Point in check early in the game. Late in the first quarter, however, CPU’s Brandon Kinsey began powering through the Knights’ defensive line, doing most of the damage on a ten play touchdown drive that ended with a 4th down quarterback sneak from the one yard line. Midway through the second quarter, the Knights were gifted two points when the snap to the CP-U punter sailed through the end zone for a safety. A late touchdown drive sent the Stormin’ Pointers into halftime with a 12-2 lead.
Still trailing by ten midway through the third quarter, the Union defense forced a fumble. Sparked by the turnover, the Knights drove 45 yards in just two plays to cut the lead to three, 12-9. A long kickoff return, though, swung momentum back to the CP-U sideline. Ninety seconds later, Kinsey scored his second touchdown of the game to extend the lead back to ten points, 19-9.
Union countered with a long pass play from quarterback John Boisen to Brady Driscol, and after a 30 yard field goal by Dakota Hora, it looked like the Knights were poised to rally. From there, CP-U continued to feed the ball to Kinsey, who scored twice more on his way to 204 yards rushing.
The Knights will open District play on Friday when they travel to Story City for a games against winless Roland Story.
