A Cedar Valley Nature Trail bridge near the gazebo in La Porte City, while safe for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, has been closed to motorized traffic after an inspection revealed the decay of a support beam. Because the decay initiated internally from within the beam, previous inspections failed to identify the potential problem until it recently surfaced. The replacement cost of the bridge could cost as much as six figures, money neither County Conservation, nor the City of La Porte City has budgeted for the upcoming fiscal year. In the meantime, both county and city officials remind the public that, when limited to pedestrian and bicycle traffic, the bridge is safe and all possible solutions to ensure the uninterrupted path of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail in and around La Porte City are being explored.
