With construction of the new City Park shelter house complete, the La Porte City Parks and Recreation Department will host a Grand Opening Celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony on September 14. The new shelter measures 30×40 feet and features a large covered patio. Inside, there is seating for nearly 80 people and an overhead door makes the building easily accessible when moving large items in or out. Area residents may reserve the shelter by contacting City Hall at 342-3396. Cost is $40 per day.
The event begins at 4 PM when the Sing Me to Heaven Foundation conducts a CHAIR-ity Auction. Silent bids for a number of specially-crafted chairs will be accepted until 7:30 PM. The winners of the chairs will be announced at 8 PM with a special live auction to follow.
There will be plenty to eat at the Grand Opening, with a pulled pork meal provided by the La Porte City Firefighter’s Association from 5-8 PM. Cost for the meal is just $5. You won’t have to travel far for dessert, as the La Porte City Women’s Club will conduct a bake sale with a variety of sweet treats.
This Party in the Park heats up at 5 PM with the broadcast of the Iowa-Iowa State football game on a ten foot screen. The Women’s Club will have plenty of popcorn available at game time, and will be selling themed pompoms for Hawkeye and Cyclone fans to sport during the big game.
Show your school loyalty with Hawk or Cyclone temporary tattoos furnished by the La Porte City Parks and Recreation Commission. At 8 PM, the Commission will hold a live auction for the picnic tables that were used in the park’s old shelter house.
Tailgaters are encouraged to bring comfortable seating/lawn chairs and their own coolers to the event. While alcohol will not be sold at this Party in the Park, individuals of legal drinking age may consume the beer and wine they bring into the park in coolers, provided they are not in glass containers.
During halftime of the game, at approximately 6:30 PM, a ribbon cutting ceremony will officially dedicate the new shelter house.
Following the game, DJ Jeff will provide the music, taking requests until the event concludes at 10 PM. The new shelter’s Grand Opening is a great opportunity to support the community, enjoy a great football game, and support local organizations at a fun family event.
