If you live in an area that was recently flooded, your private well may be in danger of contamination. Floodwaters carry contaminants that may pose a risk to your family’s health; it is best to play it safe and assume that any wells that have been submerged under floodwaters are likely contaminated. In addition, wells older than 10 years or those that are low-lying have an increased likelihood of contamination, even if there is no visible damage.

The Black Hawk County Health Department, in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Public Health is offering free well water testing for private well owners in Black Hawk County. This testing will look for potentially harmful contaminants including E. coli and coliform bacteria, nitrates, and arsenic.

In addition to well water testing, financial assistance is also available to assist with the proper reconstruction of damaged private wells and the plugging of abandoned wells. These grants are available for a limited time.

For more information or to sign up for the program, residents should contact the Black Hawk County Health Department at 319-291-2413.
