It is not too late to get a flu shot. Respiratory Influenza (flu) is widespread across Iowa. The flu season typically peaks in February and can last until May. Vaccination is the best defense against the flu. The Iowa Department of Public Health recommends all Iowans over the age of 6 months receive the vaccine.
The flu is a respiratory illness with fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches. Flu illness typically lasts two to seven days. It comes on suddenly and may cause severe illness or even death. Remember the three Cs:
Cover your cough
Clean your hands
Contain germs by staying home when ill
The Black Hawk County Health Department has a limited supply of flu vaccine available for adults ages 18 and older. Cost: $25 and sliding fee discount available for those who qualify. To make an appointment, call 319-291-2413.
