Donald T. Richards, 91, of Clearwater, FL, passed on to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. Don was in excellent health for most of his 91 years and after a short battle with cancer went peacefully in his sleep. He was cared for lovingly by his wife Natalie and was under the care of Suncoast Hospice.
Mr. Richards was born on May 6, 1924, in La Porte City, to Theodore and Dorothy Richards. He graduated from La Porte City High School in 1942 and served in the US Army Combat Engineers during World War II. He landed on Utah Beach on June 7, 1944, and was wounded while fighting in Belgium being awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Don married Rosalie Bradfield of Waterloo, on July 12, 1946 and they later divorced. He married Natalie Williamson on December 28, 1978, in Spirit Lake, IA.
Don partnered with his father in the Richards & Richards Implement and Coal dealership on Main Street in La Porte City. He was one of the founding members of the LPC Golf Club, a volunteer LPC firefighter, Commander of the American Legion for some years and served on the Black Hawk County Republican Central Committee. Don was a very talented artist and musician, especially loving to draw portraits and play his ukulele. He was an avid baseball fan and was an umpire in the NICL in the 1960’s and for the American Legion league games in the 1950’s. After the shop closed, he became a carpet representative until he retired and moved to Florida. Don was a member of The Kirk of Dunedin Church and a lifetime American Legion member.
He is survived by his wife, Natalie, and his four children: Cynthia (Bruce) Gross of Odessa, MO; Reid (Cathy) Richards of Bloomington, IL; Cathy (Jerry) Siemens of Vinton; and Brad (Ann) Richards of Rochester, MN; two stepchildren: Ramona Frederick and Russ (Cherie) Williamson, both of Papillion, NE; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, great-granddaughter, DeAnn Gross and stepson, Rick Williamson.
