February is National Heart Month. Students in grades K-8 at Dysart-Geneseo (D-G) Elementary and Union Middle School (UMS) will be participating in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart event. All of the funds raised by the students are donated to the AHA to fight heart disease, fund life-saving research, and share educational materials.
Heart disease and congenital heart defects touch so many lives, including those of the students and staff in the Union Community School District. During the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Event, students will learn about heart health in class and may choose to raise money by asking family, friends, neighbors and parents to support them as they participate in related activities in physical education classes.
The Kickoff Assembly for the 2017 D-G Elementary’s Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart event will take place on Monday, February 16 at 2:30 PM in the school gymnasium. D-G students will receive their Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart information and donation collection envelopes that day. Up to six Zoo Crew animals can be earned by students who choose to collect donations. UMS students will receive their envelopes in physical education classes on February 15-16.
While the deadline for the students to return their donation envelopes is Wednesday, March 1, the jumping and hooping for heart will take place in physical education classes the week of February 20–24.
The schools welcome and thank members of the community who would like to support this event. Donations of cash and checks made payable to the American Heart Association will be accepted until March 1. Donations may also be submitted online at www.heart.org/jump. Use the drop down boxes to select the state (Iowa) and city (Dysart), then click the Join Team button of the appropriate school you’d like to support.
The Dysart schools conduct the Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart Event on an every-other year basis. In 2015, thanks to the generosity of the school and greater community, the event was a tremendous success. Consider:

  • D-G students collected donations totalling $6,524!
  • Mrs. Petersen’s Kindergarten grade class earned the pizza party by winning the class challenge.
  • 26 D-G students collected more than $100. Eight of those 26 students collected over $200.
  • All of the dollars collected fund outreach and research here in the state of Iowa.
  • The 2015 Jump Rope for Heart event in Dysart saved 131 lives!
