Scott McIntosh, far left, offers words of thanks to Louis Beck and the group of Union High School students who participated in a tree (re)planting ceremony last week. The buckeye tree planted by the students replaced the tree originally planted in memory of Peg McIntosh, Union High School teacher who taught in La Porte City for 28 years prior to her death of ovarian cancer in February 2002. The new tree was planted in front of the high school, adjacent to the location of the old one, which was damaged and brought down by high winds last year. Following the planting, the original marker (inset) was placed at the site. McIntosh noted that the buckeyes ultimately produced by the tree will be presented to graduating students as a symbol of good health and luck. Photo by Mike Whittlesey.
