At a ceremony held at the Park Place Event Centre in Cedar Falls on June 23, eight octogenarians were honored for their lifetime achievements in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier’s “Eight Over Eighty” feature.
Among them was Sonja Johannsen who served as Mayor Mayor of La Porte City from 1970-76, the first female in the city’s history to hold the office. After serving as Mayor, Johannsen then served multiple terms as a member of the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors.
Nominations made on behalf of Johannsen referenced her work as a member of the Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission’s Advisory Board, helping initiate a recycling program for La Porte City residents in 1972, and her efforts to help organize La Porte City Council on Aging, for the purpose of offering a senior citizen nutrition program. These are just a few examples of her tireless efforts to help improve the community.
While Johannsen now lives in Waterloo and currently serves as the President of the Black Hawk County Republican Women.
