The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Basics is a free six-week class for parents or family caregivers of children or adolescents who have mental health disorders, have symptoms but no diagnosis, or have autism. The class will meet weekly from 6 to 8:30 PM, starting Thursday, April 18 through May 23. It will be held at First Congregational Church, 608 West 4th Street, in Waterloo. It is open to anyone from any Iowa county, not just Black Hawk County.
The class covers effective treatments, problem-solving skills, strategies helpful in handling challenging behaviors, and record keeping systems for working with the school and healthcare systems. Additional information will be presented, including how to plan for crisis management and relapse, as well as how to build a community of support.
The deadline for registration is Friday, March 29. If you have questions or want to register, please contact Leslie Cohn at 319-235-5263 or by email at email@example.com.
