Union Tops Benton 50-46

The Union girls' basketball team beat Benton Community on their home court on December 13 50-46. This was a hard fought game that went down to the wire. In the first quarter, Benton edged out to a 14-10 lead. Union then went on a 12-0 run to take a 22-14 mid-way through the second. Sophomore Courtney Powell helped to ignite this run with a three pointer and back to back steals for layups. Benton responded to close the gap to within three to end the half.

The third quarter was back and forth and ended with Benton on top 34-33. Union built a slight lead mid-way through the fourth, but Benton was within one with less than two minutes to play. Union made enough free throws down the stretch to close out with a win. Sophomore Kaeli Block made two of those crucial free throws with just seconds remaining to extend the lead to four and a final score of 50-46.

Courtney Powell lead the way with 15 points to go along with five steals.

"This was a nice team win for the girls. Several girls stepped up in various ways. Courtney and Maggie combined for five three pointers at key times of the game. Kaeli and Jackie shot very well from the free throw line going a combined 8 for 10 which was huge."

Union is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
