Get caught reading at the library in the month of May and you’ll get rewarded. May is Get Caught Reading Month and the library loves readers.
National Children’s Book Week is May 13-19. At Hawkins Memorial Library we have more than 2,700 easy reading books, over 3,700 juvenile books, and 800+ books for young adults on our shelves. Also available for children are DVDs, games, puzzles, audio books, ebooks, movies days, and special programs.
On Thursday, May 16, Preschool Story Time will include a field trip to the La Porte City FFA Historical & Ag Museum Fire Station and Jailhouse. Children will read about behavior and experience what it is like to be behind bars in a jail cell.
May is Older Americans Month. There are many wonderful items at the library for adult readers to enjoy including paperback and hardcover books, large print books, audio books, ebooks, and magazines.
The last Preschool Story Time program for the school year will be Thursday, May 23. And of course we will read about summer.
Plan ahead for your Memorial Day weekend reading and movie viewing. The library will be closed for the holiday on Monday, May 27.
Hawkins Memorial Library is currently accepting member applications for the Library Board of Trustees. Consider applying if you care about the future of the library, reside in Black Hawk County, and are willing to make operating and planning decisions to direct and control all affairs of the library. This is a six-year term starting on July 2, 2013. Board of Trustees meetings are held the second Monday each month at 6 PM. Apply at the library or City Hall.
