October is Computer Learning Month. Self-paced computer learning programs are available through LearningExpress on the library’s website. Programs include software tutorials and introductory training courses on how to use a computer, search the internet, and social networking. Go to, click on the Learning Express icon, log in, choose your module, and start learning.

A La Porte City Fireman will be our expert guest teaching fire safety at Story Time on Thursday, October 10, at 10:30 AM. For Fire Prevention Week, preschoolers will hear stories, inspect fire equipment, and practice fire safety skills.  All preschool aged children are invited to join us.

Hawkins’ Handcrafters meet on Thursday, October 10, from 1-3 PM. Bring any project you are working on and join other creative people at the library.

The Kids’ Wild About Books Club, a book club for kids ages 4th grade and up, will talk about the book Savvy, by Ingrid Law, on Wednesday, October 16, at 3:45 PM.  To participate, register at the library, check out a Savvy book to read, and then return on October 16, to chat.

Preschoolers will enjoy reading about Halloween at Story Time on October 17. Our stories and activities will get children in the mood for the holiday and our annual Trick-or-Treating event at downtown businesses on October 31.

The movie Hocus Pocus is showing at the library on Wednesday, October 23, at 1:15 PM. After 300 years, three sister witches are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it us up to two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to the witches’ reign of terror once and for all. Bring your friends for the movie, popcorn, and games.

Story Time attendees will visit the La Porte City FFA Historical & Ag Museum on Thursday, October 24. Art is the topic that morning for preschoolers joining us.

Authors with last names beginning with the letters A, B, or C, on our sale shelves are offered at the extremely low price $.25 each. Purchase these sale hardcover and paperback books from the library during the month of October.
