Celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month in September.  Americans check out an average of more than seven books each year and only spend $33 a year for the public library.  From July 2012 through June 2013 patrons using Hawkins Memorial Library saved $514,294.85 by borrowing items instead of purchasing them. A library card is the smartest card. Get it and use it at your library.
At Story Time on Thursday, September 12, at 10:30 AM, residents from La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center will visit to help us celebrate Read A Book Day. They will participate in the stories and activities shared that morning with preschoolers.
Bring your stitching or craft project and join us for Hawkins’ Handcrafters on Thursday, September 12, from 1 to 3 PM. For a couple of hours you can focus on completing a work in progress, or start something new, while surrounded by friends and lively conversation. All types of handwork are welcome. This group meets afternoons on the second and fourth Thursdays each month.
We are getting an early start on Union Homecoming at Preschool Story Time on Thursday, September 19. Reading and activities for the kids will be led by a UHS football player and cheerleader.  Come for the morning and get in the Homecoming spirit at Story Time.
The movie Oliver and Company is showing at 1:15 PM on Wednesday, September 25. In this delightful flick, a lost and alone kitten joins a gang of dogs engaged in petty larceny in New York. Grab your friends and join us for a movie, popcorn and games.
Preschool Story Time on September 26 will include a visit to the La Porte City FFA Historical & Ag Museum for reading and fun.
Mark your calendar for the next Hawkins’ Handcrafters on Thursday, September 26, 1-3 PM at the library.
The library has a UPS battery backup system with two batteries for sale.  Please stop at the library if you are interested.
