Dilley_Curly_webJoseph W. “Curly” Dilley, age 91, of La Porte City, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

He was born August 13, 1922, in Cumberland, WI, the son of Frank and Olga (Wolfgram) Dilley. Curly was united in marriage with Mary E. “Mick” O’Neill on August 15, 1942, in Lancaster, MO. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2011.

Curly worked for various farmers through the years until going to work as a heavy equipment operator for Black Hawk County for 22 years, retiring in 1989. Following retirement, he worked for eight years as a greeter at Wal-Mart, where he was twice nominated greeter of the year. Curly loved talking to people and telling stories of all kind. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City.

Survivors include a son, Richard W. (Connie) Dilley of Solon; four grandchildren, Michael (Rebecca) Combs, Patrick Combs, Gabrielle Combs and Christiana Combs, all of Virginia; several great grandchildren; a brother, Ervin Dilley of Dover, DE; five sisters, Irene Gosney of Evansdale, Mardelle Vallarian of Gulfport, MS, Esther (Bob) Cagley of Ionia, Leola (Paul) Kriener of Waterloo and Ethel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a son, John Combs; a grandson, Jeffrey Dilley; five brothers, John, Francis, Lawrence, Albert and Junior Dilley and a sister, Eleanor Wiese.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City with burial in West View Cemetery.  Public visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at La Porte City Funeral Home, 606 E. Main St. La Porte City and an hour prior to the services on Thursday at the Church.
