Judith Kay “Judy” Gates, 72, of La Porte City, went to heaven Sunday, September 4, 2016, at her home. She was born April 2, 1944, in Waterloo the daughter of Karl and Melda (Maldzahn) Weltzin. She was a 1962 graduate of Jesup High School. Judy was united in marriage to Gary Gates on September 2, 1966, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
Judy worked various jobs including Black Hawk County Courthouse, Hy-Vee, La Porte City Bakery, but the job that she loved the most was caring for her grandchildren. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City.
She is survived by her husband Gary of La Porte City; one son, Jason (Jennifer) Gates of La Porte City; one daughter, Lynette (Jon Holst) Buenger of Elk Point, South Dakota; five grandchildren, Hannah, Aubrey, Tyler, Nathan and Madison; two sisters and one brother.
Preceding her in death are her parents and one brother.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2016 at the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City with burial in the West View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the church and also one hour before the service.
Judy loved cooking, dancing, collecting cookie jars and cookbooks and spending time with her family.
