The Waterloo Lions Club is holding their semi-annual Used Book Sale from April 16-18, from 9 AM-9 PM and Sunday April 19, from 10 AM-5 PM at the Crossroads Shopping Mall lower level just outside of J. C. Penney’s. This fundraiser provides the club money to assist area individuals needing eyeglasses or hearing aids.
New this year, there will be a KidSight Screening on Saturday morning, April 18. KidSight is a joint project of the Lions Clubs of Iowa and the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. It is dedicated to enhancing the early detection and treatment of vision impairments in Iowa’s young children through screening and public education. Last year 44,000 children were screened by Lions Clubs throughout Iowa. Pictures of each child’s eyes are taken with special digital camera and photos are then sent to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences for evaluation. Parents will receive results within 4 weeks after screening. On average, 3-5% will be detected with a vision problem. If a problem is detected, parents are given a letter of referral and a list of local ophthalmologist and optometrists. FREE screenings are available for children from age 6 months through 4 years with parent or guardian present. Those participating will be able to select a free book after the screening.
