The City Council of La Porte City, Iowa met in regular session on July 28, 2014.  Mayor David Neil called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM with Council Members Eric Allsup, Todd Butler and Brent Sadler present. Absent were Council Members Sarah Craft and Mike Johnson. Also present were Dale and Toni Benda.
Dale and Toni Benda requested that the City place “No Parking” signs in the alley behind the 200 block of Main Street.  Parked cars are blocking the Benda’s access to their garage and parking area.  The City Clerk will discuss the issue with the Police Department.
The City Council passed the final reading of an Ordinance 484 that prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes in public buildings. Electronic cigarettes are not governed by Iowa’s Smoke Free Air Act, and as such are not prohibited in public buildings.  However, Iowa law does allow building owners to prohibit their use.
Resolution 14-44 was adopted.  The Resolution approves the closure of the 300 – 500 blocks of Main Street on September 20th for the Bargains on the Bricks Event.
The Council also passed resolution 14-45, which sets the time and date for a public hearing to consider the sale of Sweet Addition, Lot 28. The public hearing will take place on August 11, 2014 at 7 PM.
The City Council gave final approval for an offer to purchase a portion of the property located at 504 Tama Street.  The City wishes to purchase the lot as part of a larger REAP Grant project.  Purchase price for the 1.94 acre parcel is $23,500.  The City will pay closing costs and the cost to divide.
The next City Council meeting will take place on August 11, 2014.
