The Classes of 1956 and 1957 hosted the 13th bi-annual alumni reunion and banquet at the La Porte City Golf Club on August 8, 2015 with a social hour preceding the dinner. There were 153 members and spouses attending from the classes of 1936 through 1959. Jack Arnett opened the dinner with prayer. The evening was spent in conversation and renewing old friendships.
Maxine Benda was awarded a prize for being the oldest, and Kay Kober, also from the class of 1936 attended. Class members from nine different states were present. Dick and Margaret Brust from Oregon were awarded a prize for traveling the farthest. Marie Larson, La Porte City High School music teacher, joined her former students to reminisce about the days during her teaching career from 1949 to 1952.
Katherine Ollendieck introduced a group of students who, by volunteering their time to serve at the reunion banquet, earned silver cord hours as part of their Union High School experience. They did an outstanding job of serving meals and cleaning up afterward. The delicious food consisting of steak or chicken, potatoes, vegetables, rolls and dessert was prepared by the La Porte City Bakery.
Katherine also spoke briefly about the Union Community School Foundation, whose mission is to support the school district’s vision: “Education to meet tomorrow’s challenges.” The Foundation works to accomplish this mission by providing financial support to enhance and enrich the experiences of students for generations to come. The Foundation also affords donors an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, and involves the community in assuring quality programs, services and facilities for the leaders and workers of tomorrow. Anyone interested in making a gift to the Foundation is encouraged to contact Superintendent Neil Mullen at the high school.
Kenneth Benda closed the reunion with words of thanks to those who attended and all who helped make the alumni reunion an enjoyable event. At the conclusion of the reunion, it began to rain and the students helped by holding umbrellas and escorting the alumni and guests to their cars.
The next alumni reunion will be held on August 5, 2017, hosted by the Classes of 1958 and 1959.
