The Iowa Urban Tree Council is proud to announce the La Porte City – Dysart FFA Chapter as an Outstanding Youth Project/Program for 2013.  The award was presented at the 24th Annual Urban Forestry Awards Luncheon on April 3, 2014 held at the Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston.
The La Porte City – Dysart FFA Chapter saw an opportunity, wrote a plan, and executed a project that will benefit their community for years. The Chapter noticed some vacant land from a flood buyout program and decided to put the land to use. They wrote up a detailed plan to turn the land into a community garden and presented it to the city council, where the project was approved. As part of the community garden plan the Chapter planted an orchard of over 30 trees.
The La Porte City – Dysart FFA Chapter is an outstanding example of Iowa’s community forestry youth projects/programs, by enhancing our forest resources.  The orchard and community garden the Chapter worked on and maintained will benefit their community for future generations.
