Kindergarten students at La Porte City Elementary School were treated to a fire truck ride on October 9, as part of a trip to the Fire Station during Fire Prevention Week. While at the station, students learned about the importance of having a meeting place outside of the family home, in case of emergency. In addition to feeling the weight of a fireman’s coat and helmet, they also got a good look at a fireman in full gear and listened to how a person’ voice changes when speaking while wearing an oxygen tank. La Porte City Fire and Rescue personnel also demonstrated use of a thermal imaging unit, a helpful tool firemen use to help locate people and pets. But it was evident from the smiles and chants of “Sirens! Sirens!” that the ride aboard a fire engine was the highlight of the experience. Photos by Mary Bauer.
