The City Council of La Porte City, Iowa met in special session on March 28, 2016. Mayor David Neil called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM with Council Members Eric Allsup, Kristi Harrill, Mike Johnson and Brent Sadler. Absent was Council Member David Williams. Also present were Dennis Huisman, Theresa Renaud, Bill Bergmeier, Chris Fischels, Linda Lewis and MaryAnn Lewis.
Unless otherwise noted, all actions were passed by affirmative and unanimous vote of the council members present.
Moved by Johnson, seconded by Allsup to approve the agenda.
The Council considered how to allocate the City’s 13 votes for the PROPOSED AMENDMENT #4 TO SWEET OWNERS STATEMENT AND DEDICATION. The amendment would add lots 11 and 12 to the list of lots where dual homes or condos could be built. Mayor Neil asked realtor Chris Fischels if dual homes were intended to be built on both lots 11 and 12 by the buyer. Fischels responded that the buyer was not sure what he would be building but wanted to know if the option of a condo was available. Neil then asked if it was typical to place condo in mainly single family neighborhoods. Fischels responded that usually they were in an area of their own. Theresa Renaud indicated that she was opposed to the change because she did not want to see rental properties in her neighborhood. She added that if she knew the builder she might be alright with it. Mayor Neil indicated that he had heard support for the idea of condos from those who wanted smaller homes with ease of access. Linda Lewis indicated that she though that the City needed an area for condos for the elderly population, but didn’t want them at the Sweet Addition. Johnson indicated that he was not sure if he was in favor of the proposed change. Allsup indicated that he though the City should not vote at the owners meeting at all and let the residents decide.
Moved by Johnson, seconded by Allsup to table the allocation of votes.
Moved by Johnson, seconded by Allsup to adjourn at 6:30 PM.
