Volunteers from the La Porte City Fire Rescue Department were busy last week celebrating National Fire Prevention Week. In addition to hosting their annual fish fry and open house, several educational opportunities were provided to students at La Porte City Elementary School, including a fire truck ride and visit to the fire station for kindergarteners and a fire safety assembly for first, second and third graders.
At an all-school assembly on Friday, Diane McIntosh of Sing Me to Heaven Foundation presented smoke detectors, courtesy of Teresa Meyer and Farm Bureau Financial Services, to the winners of the school’s fire safety poster contest. This year marked the fourth year that Sing Me to Heaven, a foundation established to assist families in Iowa grieving the loss of a child, has sponsored the contest.
