Following a waffle breakfast hosted at the fire station, the La Porte City Parks and Recreation Commission will formally dedicate the newly erected modular ice rink on Saturday, December 14. Located adjacent to the car wash near the corner of Main Street and Tama Road, where a home once set prior to the flood of 2008, the ice rink’s modular design allows it to be assembled in the fall and disassembled at the conclusion of the winter season. The Parks and Recreation Commission opted for the modular design because permanent structures cannot occupy ground that is part of the federal government’s flood buyout program.
On Saturday, a breakfast consisting of waffles, sausage and drinks will be served from 8-11 AM at the fire station. Cost is $7 per person, with kids ages five an under eating free. In addition to the breakfast, a raffle drawing for two tickets to a Waterloo Blackhawks hockey game and two $25 Scheels gift cards will be held. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used in support of the new rink.
At noon, the scene shifts to the new ice rink for Grand Opening activities that include an appearance by TommyHawk, the mascot of the Waterloo Blackhawks USHL Hockey Team.
