The La Porte City Police Association wants the community to know that public safety is much more than officers patrolling the community. The organization has been busy in 2018, sponsoring a number of programs and events aimed at increasing public safety and raising awareness of the Public Safety Department’s role in the community.

During the summer, Ice Cream with a Cop at Tootsie’s Ice Cream & More gave people the opportunity to visit with officers and get an up close look at the city’s police vehicles. Officers also used the warm summer weather to distribute Tootsie Tickets for a free ice cream cones to young people modeling good and safe behaviors.

The Police Association also joined several area businesses to sponsor a local youth softball team.

Recently, the Association donated a pair of special booster seats to La Porte City Elementary School. Principal Todd Parker expressed the school’s appreciation for the donation and said the booster seats will be used to transport younger students to and from school safely.

A series of classes promoting women’s safety was held during August and September. The classes, attended by as many as 25 women, were taught by retired Tama County Deputy Wes Sebetka and focused on helping women identify and practice ways to safely remove themselves from potentially dangerous or threatening situations.

The Police Association’s efforts to positively impact the community continue into the holiday season, as they look to donate Thanksgiving meals and adopt a family or two in need to assist with purchasing gifts at Christmas time. Plans are also underway for a major community safety event to be held in June 2019.

These initiatives are made possible by the generous donations made by area businesses and La Porte City citizens. To become an honorary member of the La Porte City Police Association and support their efforts to promote public safety, your tax-deductible donation may be dropped off at the Police Department or City Hall during regular business hours or mailed to:
