Margaret Eileen Purdy, 97, of La Porte City, died Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home following a lengthy illness. She was born July 4, 1917, in rural La Porte City the daughter of Glen R. and Margaret A. (Smith) Foss. She married Nicholas A. Schmitz on November 6, 1940; he preceded her in death on August 1, 1944. She married Merville W. Purdy on May 22, 1948, he preceded her in death on April 6, 1986.

Margaret worked for various factories including Gator Machines, Micro Switch and Waterloo Industries. She retired December 1, 1979 from Waterloo Industries as the first woman retiree. After retirement she worked at Casey’s General Store in La Porte City. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Stan) Schneider of Cedar Falls, Eileen Buck of La Porte City; five sons, Glen of Waterloo, Nicholas (Linda) of Waterloo, Robert (Rosie) of Washburn, William (Cora) of Algoma, WI, Merville (Vicki) of Forestville, WI; 26 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one sister, Verna Mae Dengler of Cedar Falls; sisters-in-law, Millie Foss of Cedar Falls, Kathleen Foss of La Porte City, Novie Foss of La Porte City and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Elwin, Glen and Harold Foss, son-in-law, Lee Buck and two nephews, Robert Foss and Thomas Dengler.
Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte City or the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
Margaret enjoyed being with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved watching the birds and listening to music, especially Lawrence Welk and polka music.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held November 11, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilbertville.
