No Other Gods
The story of the fiery furnace in Daniel is the story of a king who demanded that all the people in his country bow down to a golden statue at certain times each day. Whoever refused would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who believed in God refused to do so.
So the king cranks up the furnace and has the three men of God thrown in. And the king sees four men in the furnace walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed. He orders the three out and they weren’t even scorched. The king gives praise to their God and orders no one to speak against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
We have many gods that we give way too much importance to: materialism, sports, being liked, jobs. God knows that when we bow down to other gods, we are not true to God’s intention for us. Bowing to false gods will not give us true joy. God is faithful. And God continues to call us to be faithful to Him. God alone gives us true life. Each day we need to refuse to worship false gods and choose to worship God and God alone. Because as the King said, “For no other god can save in this way.”
