In the school’s first-ever entry in this competition, a team of five Union Middle School students placed third at the 2014 Regional Middle School Science Bowl held on February 22 at the Ames Lab. The Ames Laboratory is a government-owned, contractor-operated national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), operated by and located on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Payton Hellman, Wesley Hanson, Daniel Johanningmeier, Isaac Sebetka, and Austin Timmer represented Union Middle School, who competed in a double elimination tournament featuring 24 teams from across the state of Iowa, answering advanced science and math questions.

The first place team, Ames Middle School, advanced to compete in the 2014 National Science Bowl on April 24-28 in Washington, D.C. St. Albert Middle School (Council Bluffs) placed second.

The team was coached by Mrs. Vada Elliott, Union Talented and Gifted instructor.
