Several Union Middle School Band members participated in the North East Iowa Bandmasters Association (NEIBA) Solo Ensemble Contest on February 28, 2013.

A “Good” rating and white ribbon was awarded to 6th grader Trey Smutz on his bass clarinet solo. Red ribbons and “Excellent” ratings were awarded to 6th graders Libby Sauer and Rashawn Williams (baritone), Hunter Stwalley (tuba), Emily Miehe (alto saxophone) and CJ Weltzin (trumpet); 7th grader Lyric Dutton (clarinet); and 8th grader Austin Frush (baritone sax). Blue ribbons and “Superior” ratings were awarded to 6th graders Kody Crawford (alto sax), Mason Scott (baritone), Hunter Klima and Scarlett Ellsworth (clarinet), Carter Spore (trombone) and Hannah Gates (flute), 7th graders Emily Schmidt (alto sax), Lauren Harrigan and Meghan Klein (clarinet), and Cade Rahlf (trumpet), and 8th graders Taylor Brown (trumpet), Nathan Acuff (multiple percussion), and the percussion emsemble of Neesa Bellinger, Veronica Haas, Summer DeHart, Lizzie Klein, Emily Dobson, and Anna Garwood.

Three performances received “Highly Superior” ratings and were awarded gold ribbons. Recipients included 8th grade trumpet player Hallie Spore for her performance of “English Suite” by R. Bernard Fitzgerald, 8th grade flute  player Geneva Basye for her performance of  “The Magic Flute” by Mozart/Steensland, and 8th grade trombone player Brady Rempe on his performance of “Amethyst” by Vander Cook.

Bill Livingston judged the contest and Mary Aschenbrenner accompanied the students on piano.
