John Frank Carey, 84, of Independence, and formerly of Oelwein, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 at Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo.

John was born January 13, 1934 in Staceyville, Iowa, the son of John Hobson Carey and Bessie Lambert Carey. He graduated from Charles City High School. He married Cheryl Corbin and they later divorced. John graduated from Marion College and then from Drake University. He majored in accounting and worked for several accounting companies before buying Johnson Accounting in Oelwein, which became known as John Carey Co.

John served on many local and district boards for different organizations and was a very social and kind-hearted person. He married Suzanne E. Hanna on November 29, 1997. He loved his family and animals, as well.

Survivors include his wife Suzie Carey, children, Steve (Pam) Carey of Oelwein, Debbie (Mark) McClain of Foley, Alabama, DeeAnn (Erik) Crandall of Janesville, Scott (Lori) Carey of New Hampton; stepchildren, Autumn (David) Hayes of Oelwein, Nona (Richard) Sampson of Ashburton, New Zealand, James (Missy) Gregory of Billings, Montana, Kelly (Dave) Campbell of San Diego, California; as well as 28 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild Daniel Trust Gregory.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 17, 10:30 a.m. at Heartland Community Church, 705 Bishop, in La Porte City, where visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Burial will be at a later date.
