A Black Hawk county man isn’t joking when he tells his family and friends he won a big prize from a lottery ticket on April Fool’s Day.
Pat Shahan of La Porte City claimed a $50,000 prize in the lottery’s “Spin ‘N Win” scratch game Friday – April Fool’s Day. He claimed the fifth of 12 top prizes of $50,000 available in the game.
Shahan’s lottery story may seem far-fetched given the day it happened, but it’s true. He bought his winning ticket the same day at Casey’s, 402 Highway 218 N. in La Porte City using money he found on the ground.
“I found a $20 bill today and I used that $20 bill to buy this lottery ticket and won $50,000,” Shahan told lottery employees Friday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.
The 68-year-old retired security worker said he was on his way home and decided to buy a lottery ticket after finding the money. He chose a Spin ‘N Win ticket because he said he’s had some good luck playing that game, winning prizes of $25 and $50 recently.
Shahan said he scratched off his ticket before leaving the store.
“First I thought, ‘Ah, that can’t be.’ I even had the gal there at the Casey’s where I bought it check it and she had to look at it three times before she says, ‘Whoa!’” Shahan said.
After his big lottery win was confirmed Shahan said he went home and told his wife, Joy, and the couple decided to go to Cedar Rapids right away and claim their winnings.
The couple has two daughters and Shahan said it was going to be difficult to tell them he won the lottery on April Fool’s Day.
“They’re going to say, ‘Ah yeah, April Fools, Dad!’” he said.
The couple said they plan to use a portion of their lottery winnings to pay bills and save the rest for visiting family and friends.
Spin ‘N Win is a $5 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery’s website, www.ialottery.com.
